Abstract
Privacy by Design (PbD) has been defined in many ways by the academia. It was seen as a design philosophy to improve the overall privacy friendliness of IT systems, a competitive business advantage, a set of technical solutions for privacy engineering and ultimately a legal obligation. The aim of this paper is to offer an overview on the origins and layers of PbD. Concluding remarks are provided on the growing attention PbD is receiving by a triangularization of the three forces shaping this concept.
