Abstract
Private law has always been closely related to economic life. Without know-ledge of the contemporary economic climate even the development of modern civil law cannot be understood in its entirety. This makes the analysis of economic history inevitable for those who are working on issues related to civil law. The economic interests occur behind most of the civil norms. The legislator and those applying the law may take these economic interests also into account. This is particularly the case regarding the rules on securities in rem since this area has been directly affected by the economic changes of the 19th-20th centuries. The purpose of this study is to show how the changes in the development of the Hungarian economy have influenced the rules on securities in rem throughout the last 150 years, and what kind of challenges the Hungarian legislation has faced resulting from these changes.
